Basic Triathlon Needs

I see a lot of just getting into the sport and wondering what they need. We threw together a simple list to help you get started.

Swim - goggles, swimsuit or trikit, swim cap, many think they need a wetsuit - but this is dependent on distance and water temp.

Bike - a bike you can ride and fits you, if the bike is too small it’ll be harder to get speed and your legs will hurt, too big and you’ll be moving side to side and parts will rub and get very sore; helmet, sunglasses (not only for sun, but also for bugs and other debris that may be in the air). Practice grabbing a water bottle and drinking while riding. Nothing is worse than getting on the run and getting cramps or a headache because you didn’t drink.

Run - good running shoes, visor or hat (keeps sun or rain off your face, if sunny, keeping your face shaded will help keep you a little cooler), race belt with race bib

In transition - KEEP IT SIMPLE and ORGANIZED. Small towel, water bottle, helmet, sunglasses and shoes you’ll use for bike portion - toward the front and behind what you need for the run. Everything goes by your front wheel. There is not a lot of space in transition - KEEP IT SIMPLE and ORGANIZED.

This is the basics, what you would need to get through a sprint, as you move up in distance you will want to take hydration and nutrition on the bike and possibly the run.

THINGS YOU DO NOT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT FOR YOUR FIRST RACE: a specific type of bike - just make sure whatever you choose fits you; clip-in pedals for your bike; a tri kit; a special watch

Have a good breakfast - bagel with peanut butter, oatmeal; get in some carbs and hydrate especially if it is warm out. Sip on electrolytes until race time and have a gel or banana if it has been a couple hours since breakfast by race time.
